• Typical Investors. Financial institutions like brokerage firms, investment banks, or entities with active trading desks commonly hold trading securities.
• Presentation. Because of frequent turnover, trading securities appear as current assets on the balance sheet.
The rationale for immediate recognition in the income statement is that trading securities are essentially part of an enterprise’s operating activities; fluctuations in their value directly affect current operating performance.
AFS securities represent debt or equity instruments not classified as Trading or Held-to-Maturity. These securities are typically acquired with a view to long-term appreciation or yield, but the entity does not have a firm positive intent (and the ability) to hold them to maturity if it’s a debt instrument.
• Measurement. AFS securities are measured at fair value.
• Unrealized Gains/Losses. Recognized in other comprehensive income (OCI) until realized (i.e., until the securities are sold or deemed impaired). At the point of sale or impairment, the cumulative unrealized gains/losses recognized in OCI get reclassified (often referred to as “recycled”) into net income.
